LYFT Driver Requirements

1. Aged at least 21 years old.

If you are not 21 years old or older, don’t bother to apply because you don’t meet the required age qualification. The company will not make any exception for you even if you are turning 21 next week. Most Lyft drivers are between 25 and 40 years but Lyft won’t discriminate against your age even if you are a bit older.

2. Valid in-state driving license.

You must have an in-state driver license which has remained active for at least one year. If you are new to the state, where you plan to operate as a Lyft driver, go to the nearest DMV office to apply for a new license or transfer your out-of-state driving license. Having an in-state license will also help you deal with issues such getting pulled over by the police.

3. One year US driving experience.

You must have at least one year of US driving experience. Lyft also considers applicants with a clean driving record more than those with a bad history.

4. In-state auto insurance cover.

You must have an in-state auto insurance policy in your own name. The company requires that your insurance policy to be issued in the state where you plan to operate as a Lyft driver because each state has its own each state has its own insurance regulations. So if you have moved in from another state, make sure you transfer your out-of-state policy to reflect your new state.

5. In-state plates with current registration.

Your car must also have in-state license plates. If you are applying as an in-state resident, make sure your license plates are up to date. If you are applying as an out-of-state resident, just get your vehicle registered in order to obtain in-state license plates or transfer your out-of-state license plates to reflect your new state. This can be done by visiting the nearest DMV office.

6. iPhone or Android mobile device.

You must own an Android or iOS enabled phone. This will enable you to download the Lyft app to your Android and iOS-based phone. When a passenger wants a ride, they will open the app on their phones and request a ride from a nearby driver. If you have turned your app on, your driver profile will be shown to the passengers for consideration.

In March 2015, the company announced the ability for passengers and drivers to add their personal information to their profiles. This includes information such as music preferences, hometown, and other details.

7. You must pass driving record check and background check.

In addition to the above requirements, you must also pass a driving record check and background check. Basically, Lyft will require you to have no major violations in the past 3 years, no drug-related driving violations in the last 7 years and no extreme infractions in the last 7 years.

In the background check, within the past seven years, you will have no violent crimes, no theft, no sexual offenses, no property damage, no drug-related offenses and no felonies committed.

You might not have the cleanest driving record or background check, but that cannot prevent you from becoming a Lyft driver.

8. Pass onboarding Mentor Session.

You must complete and pass the onboarding Mentor Session if you want to start working for Lyft. After you apply and pass the background check, your journey of becoming a Lyft driver does not end here. You will need to schedule a ‘Welcome Ride’ with a Lyft driver. Your mentor will verify all the documents you submitted and confirm whether your car meets all the requirements. Any major cosmetic or mechanical issue will automatically disqualify your car. However, you will be given another chance to present another car.
